Now in its second year, the Bernard Harris Summer
Science Camp (BHSSC) at UCF is funded by the ExxonMobile
Corporation in partnership with The Harris Foundation.
As a result of this funding, students attend for
FREE if they are one of the 52 middle school
students selected.
The BHSSC at UCF seeks to encourage mathematics and
science education, motivate youth to stay in school,
foster youth leadership and citizenship, as well as
instill the values of responsibility, fairness and
respect.
The camp experience is based upon guiding principles:
- Student-centered
- Practical, real world experiences and
connections
- Team-oriented, collaborative learning
- Decision-making and critical thinking skills
-
Building self-confidence
The emotional and physical
environment of the BHSSC at UCF provides an atmosphere
of trust and mutual respect that nurtures the social,
creative, intellectual, emotional and physical
development of the student, offers a student-centered
program in a multi-age setting that requires students to
use their creative and critical thinking skills to
further his/her own understanding of the universe. The
Camp also involves students in exploring solutions to
real-world questions and issues through team-oriented,
collaborative learning and the use of technology and
fosters a commitment to excellence; demanding great
things not only from students, but also from
instructors, counselors and others involved in the
camp. The BHSSC at UCF creates a culture and atmosphere
of fun for the students through team-oriented,
collaborative learning activities designed to increase
decision making, communication and critical thinking
skills. The Camp is a progressive program. It is not
for remediation, nor is it a tutorial.
